Reading the responses here, it seems incredibly likely.Īlso, I have to make a quick comment about the Thought Stop. I hope we're all lucky enough to experience something like that with the kids, and between ourselves. And to see each of them inspire passion and imagination in each other. If watching Captain Planet cry doesn't get to you, I don't what will.Īnyway, it's amazing to see so many people bring so much passion to something so so very important. There's also a video of Levar Burton crying when it hits the $1 million mark. It reached its first goal, $1 million, in under 12 hours! It's currently at $3 million + after a few days, and still has another 31 to go! Levar Burton wants to bring back Reading Rainbow with an online presence and easy access. I assume most of you have heard about the Reading Rainbow Kickstarter by now. It seems like, in a world filled with negativity, people are chomping at the bit to support positive things. It was another reminder that, despite what some who've had a hard day at work will tell you, people are fantastic. Well, the smiling crowd shots definitely caused some waterworks. The fact that so many people were so eager to support and share in that imagination. Unbridled imagination is always a joy and a wonder to behold. EXACTLY like the others, I got all choked up. Unlike most of the others who have responded, I hadn't seen or heard of this awesomeness until seeing this video. Thank you for a moment of reflection.and thank you Rita Pierson! To be mindful of those journeys, to aim to understand rather than to be understood. I felt myself being the class in that sense, always remembering that students are coming from a million places, spaces and journeys when they walk through my door. A student walks in the door and the class tries to guess where that student is coming from and who their character is. This year I remembered an improv game a theater instructor had told me, called "doors". I remembered watching it, what felt like years ago, (what a journey these months have been!) and did I stay true to who I set out to be? Was I effective? Did I lead well, understand fully and create relationships? Did/do my kids like me? I aimed to raise esteem and achievement at the same time, and often the former won out this year, not ashamed at all, to say. It was an awesome way to cap the year and allowed me a chance of self-reflection. I watched Rita's TED talk before school began back in August and so much of what she says resonates with me still, two weeks to close. On a sort of related tangent, I also think inspiration is important, which is why I'm always looking at art and music blogs-because it helps inspire me to create (music or art), or simply to look at the world in a new, magical way! Here's a funny picture series called "Pizza In The Wild" from one of my favorite art/music/photography blogs: Who knows what cardboard creations will inspire real life creations later on in life! "The idea is to not only give kids the tools to build the things that they can imagine, but to also imagine the world that they can build." I think this shows the power of imagination, and that it is incredibly important to allow children (and adults) a safe space to explore their creativity: I especially loved the bit where the adult rocket scientist says he used to make cardboard rockets when he was a child, and now as an adult, he makes real ones for NASA. Yes! I found the Caine's Arcade video very inspiring.
